Our School Council

Stop Press!!

News from the first school council meeting of the year. The school council were asked to consider 2 things

1. How could we make our school even better?

2. What should the expectations for all children at Wookey Primary be?

We would love to be able to say yes to all the ‘school improvement’ ideas the children had. Mrs Treneman will be explaining to them about the concepts of budgets in their next meeting, which hopefully will help them understand that zip wires and ponies are not possible!

However, there were a number of issues raised by the children that I am happy to say we are going to move forward on. They include:

A commitment from us to having more lessons outside the classroom (the children explained how much they enjoyed working in this way)

A more defined and organised start to the day and end of playtimes – we have made initial enquiries about re-commissioning the old school bell, which would then be rung at set times of day

New Football goals – we will commit to using our sport funding money to doing just that (on the playground and the field)

Improving the tidying away arrangements at the end of lunchtime (the children are given access to a wide variety of resources during their lunch break, but packing away is not always easy!) – we will introduce a new system of alternating boys and girls days for packing away

The children would like an outdoor classroom with a roof – that is coming, as soon as we can get rid of the swimming pool

The suggestions that we will not be acting on will also be discussed by Mrs Treneman at the next meeting, as it is important the children understand why we are not going to do everything they suggested.

In terms of the second issue that was discussed by the council, they came up with a list of agreed expectations for all children across the school. This list will be shared with all the children at our next whole school assembly.

Children should come into class quietly and move quietly around the school

Children should know where they are supposed to sit

Children should be responsible for getting out and looking after the books and equipment they need

Children should listen and concentrate, and use their indoor voices

We will also be asking for further suggestions to go on this list at our next assembly.

The organisation of the playground at lunchtime was also discussed by the children at the meeting. We believe strongly that all children should have the chance to use the resources on both our top and bottom playgrounds, but we were also happy to go with a Key Stage 2 only football zone, for health and safety reasons!
