Exciting Maths, real life learning

I want to tell you about a really exciting piece of maths work that the children in Chestnut class have produced this term.

We have needed new P.E. mats for a while, and so we decided that we would ask the children to choose the mats for us, as they are the ones that have to use them. The children had to first do some work on area to find out how many mats were needed and of what size. Then they had to compare various prices to find out which possible purchase would provide the best value for money. Finally, they had to produce a presentation for Mrs Bird in the office, as they needed to convince her to actually write the cheque!

After all the presentations we have made a decision, and the mats have been ordered. When they arrive the children will be able to say "we helped with that!" and they will see that their ideas are valued by the staff at Wookey Primary.
